How to Repair an Automatic Gate When the Gate Not Close

Most of the service calls and most of the automatic gate system issues are “Gate not closing”.
How can we resolve the issue with the automatic driveway gate not closing?

The issues with the safety sensor and gate not closing are directly detected 98% of the time, 1% of the main control board, and 1% of the opening limit switch. Check the sensor’s faces and try to clean them.

To find a compatible gate’s safety sensor, contact a technician or the supplier you purchased it from.

In case the automatic gate not closing, if your installed safety sensor is damaged and needs replacement, it is advisable to contact your gate company and submit a service request. To schedule a visit, our technicians need some checks from the owner:

Send us a video check of the safety sensor tests by waving your hand and hearing the click from the motor side.

Also, one picture from the top of the motor and the limit sensor spot.

If no clicking, and the safety sensor is the wireless type and has a battery inside?

This part of the service has to be done by the owner every 6 months or more ( depending on the area weather, battery quality, and date of make)

Check the sensor’s batteries. The batteries are only on one side, and the other side is powered by the gate opener system using wire. One small screwdriver will be needed.

Recommend that the sensor cover be sealed with silicon glue, to avoid water and spiders into it.

When the motorized gate not closing and if you would like to resolve the issue yourself and the installed sensor is a wired type, take both sides covers off and clean the cover, lens, behind the board, and input power.

Use a voltmeter to check the required electrical power based on the information found on the side of the wire connectors.
To emergency how to deactivate the safety sensor: Make and install a bridge wire to connect the NC and COM connectors that are only on one side.

If you need a replacement safety sensor for your driveway gate, send the model number or a picture.
After resolving, make sure the sensor cover is sealed with silicon glue, to avoid water and spiders into it.

The instruction manual settings and voltage vary between different brands and models of gate operator systems and types of safety sensors, rendering them incompatible.

The safety sensors that come with the Italian/Chinese-made gate operator systems are not compatible with the common garage doors, and you can not use this kind of sensor directly in garage door opener systems.

An automatic gate that isn’t closing completely can be frustrating and compromise your property’s security. Here’s a systematic approach to troubleshoot and repair the issue, starting with the simplest solutions:

1. Check for Obstructions:

  • Clear the Path: This is the most common and easiest fix. Inspect the entire path of the gate for any debris like leaves, branches, rocks, dirt, or even small animals. Even a small object can trigger the safety sensors, preventing the gate from closing.
  • Inspect Tracks and Rollers (for sliding gates): Look for any damage, misalignment, or debris accumulation in the gate tracks and rollers. Clear any obstructions and ensure the tracks are straight and parallel, allowing the rollers to move smoothly.
  • Check Hinges (for swing gates): Inspect hinges for rust, damage, or objects that might be jamming them.

2. Power Supply Issues:

  • Verify Power: Ensure the gate is receiving power. Check the circuit breaker in your electrical panel to see if it has tripped. If it’s a solar-powered gate, check the solar panels and battery status.
  • Loose Connections: Inspect all electrical wiring and connections for any visible damage, fraying, or loose connections.
  • Reset Power: Sometimes, a simple power reset can resolve electronic glitches. Turn off the power to the gate at the breaker for a few minutes, then turn it back on.

3. Sensor Problems (Photo Eyes):

  • Clean Sensors: Automatic gates use safety sensors (often called photo eyes) to detect obstacles in their path. These sensors can become dirty, smudged, or covered in cobwebs, preventing them from “seeing” each other. Gently wipe the sensor lenses with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Align Sensors: The sensors must be perfectly aligned and facing each other directly for the gate to operate correctly. If they are misaligned, gently adjust them until the indicator light (if present) confirms proper alignment.
  • Test Sensors: Wave your hand in front of a sensor to see if the gate reacts (e.g., reverses or stops). If it doesn’t, there’s a problem with the sensor or its connection.

4. Remote Control/Keypad Issues:

  • Batteries: The simplest fix for an unresponsive remote is often dead batteries. Replace them with fresh ones.
  • Reprogramming: The remote might have lost synchronization with the gate opener. Refer to your gate opener’s manual for instructions on how to reprogram the remote.
  • Signal Interference: Sometimes, nearby electrical devices or structures can interfere with the signal between the remote and the gate opener. Try operating the gate from a different location.
  • Damaged Remote/Keypad: Inspect for any visible damage to the remote or keypad. If damaged, they may need replacement.

5. Mechanical Components:

  • Lubrication: Over time, moving parts like hinges, rollers, and chains (for sliding gates) can become stiff or rusty, leading to friction and impeding movement. Lubricate them regularly with a silicone-based lubricant or white lithium grease. Be sure to clean off old grease and debris first.
  • Worn-Out Parts: Inspect for worn-out gears, hinges, rollers, or chains. These may need to be replaced if they are significantly damaged or worn.
  • Loose Hardware: Check all bolts, screws, and brackets that hold the gate and its components in place. Tighten any loose hardware. If screw holes are stripped, you may need to fill them with wood shims or use longer/thicker screws.
  • Gate Alignment and Balance: Visually inspect the gate’s alignment when it’s fully open and closed. If it appears misaligned or sags, adjustments to hinges or tracks may be necessary. For significant issues, professional help might be required.
  • Limit Switches: Automatic gates have limit switches that tell the motor when to stop. If the gate isn’t reaching its full closed position, these switches might need adjustment. Consult your gate opener’s manual for instructions.

6. Motor or Control Board Issues:

  • Unusual Noises: If the gate is making strange grinding, scraping, or straining noises, it could indicate a problem with the motor or gears.
  • Slow or Jerky Movement: This can also point to motor issues or insufficient power supply.
  • Control Board: If the gate remains in manual mode despite all troubleshooting, or if the gate opener’s display shows error codes, there might be an issue with the control board. This often requires professional diagnosis and potentially replacement.
  • Pest Infestation: In some cases, pests like insects or rodents can get into the gate motor and chew through wires, causing malfunctions.

When to Call a Professional if the gate not close:

While many issues can be resolved with DIY troubleshooting, some problems are more complex and require professional assistance. You should consider calling a qualified gate technician if:

  • You’ve tried all the basic troubleshooting steps and the gate still isn’t closing.
  • There’s significant damage to mechanical parts or the gate structure.
  • You suspect electrical issues beyond a simple tripped breaker or loose connection.
  • The motor is making unusual noises or not functioning at all.
  • You’re uncomfortable working with electrical components or complex mechanical systems.

Safety First:

  • Always disconnect power to the gate before attempting any repairs or adjustments to prevent electric shock or accidental operation.
  • Wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and eye protection.
  • Never try to force the gate to close if it’s obstructed or malfunctioning, as this can cause further damage or injury.
  • If you’re unsure about any step, it’s always best to consult the gate’s manufacturer manual or a professional.
